Elmasa Alcalde

.. And with a single glimpse I'm back in that small renovated church in Buenos Aires. Listening to Elmesa Alcalde, 87, reciting Spanish poems from Borges, Vargas Llosa, Luis Bernárdez .. All by heart! Without a doubt one of the nicest unexpected
encounters I've ever had.

In the photo she holds the paper she makes from natural materials such as flower petals, that she gets from the nuns who clean the church after each wedding. She then draws a portrait on it and signs with a poem. Mine (I couldn't resist to buy one after listening to her life story) has this magnificent poem of Francisco Luis Bernárdez:

If you plan to visit Buenos Aires in the near future make sure to head over to Manzana de Las Luces and ask for Elmesa, she will be more than glad to recite you a poem.

I met this beautiful soul when I was in Buenos Aires and we became pen-pals. I would write to her in English and she wrote back. I sent her a little book with English poems and she wrote back and sent me two drawings. I also posted her some home made paper from South Africa. the last letter I got from her was telling me they had found family in Lebanon and were going to visit. I have never heard from her again. I have the three drawings framed and hanging gin my bedroom next to my bed and I treasure them.

I visited Buenos Aires and el Mercado de las Luces where I met Elmesa and bought one of her artistic pieces. She is extraordinary and a beautiful soul. We had the piece framed and it has hanged in our homes for some 10 years. Seeing it brings back wonderful memories. Please give her my best regards. I imagine she must be 92 yrs old now. God bless Elmesa.
